Design-to-Source Monthly Insights by Supplyframe. July 2022

22/08/2022

Methodology by Supplyframe

This report has been compiled using data and trends available on the Supplyframe Design to Source Intelligence (DSI) network. This DSI network consists of more than 70 web-based resources that are used by over 11 million engineers and purchasing professionals around the world. Engineers and purchasing professionals interact with the DSI network specifically to improve their work (ie research, review, design, and purchase), which allows Supplyframe to understand market trends.

The report provides:

1. A proxy for “market” condition by evaluating trends in engineering design activities and procurement sourcing activities.

2. Understand what product categories are in demand by engineers and buyers.

3. Anticipate future sourcing demand based on where design activities are concentrated (categories and regions).

Clients can use the information provided in this report from Supplyframe to support the development of their go-to-market strategy and campaign planning and execution to achieve their organization's goals.

To protect sensitive information as well as provide a mechanism for analysis, Supplyframe normalized and indexed most of the data used in this analysis. There are two specific indexes used for trending information and benchmarking.

Design-to-Source Monthly Insights by Supplyframe

Design Activity Index by Supplyframe

Based on part level activity by engineers on the DSI Network. The activities included are related to part estimating and placing parts in projects using EDA. Actions are normalized, weighted and scored on a scale from 0 to 100.

Index scores are correlated with data parameters included in the analysis (eg country, manufacturer, categories). The value 100 reflects the maximum amount of activity in this dataset. The value 50 represents half of the maximum value in this data set.

Sourcing Activity Index by Supplyframe

Based on part level activity by buyers on the DSI Network. Activities included are related to buy clicks on the the DSI Network. Index is scored on a scale of 0 – 100. Index scores are relative to the dimensions of data being included in the analyses (ie. Country, manufacturer, categories). A value of 100 reflects maximum value in the given data set. A value of 50 reflects half of the maximum value in the given data set.

What We Saw Across The DSI Network? July 2022

Global design and sourcing activities decreased -6% and -4% respectively from June to July, in line with seasonal trends for this time of the year. Unlike June, we did not observe any additional slow down in activities this month.

• Even with the recent slow down in activities from key-markets, overall design and sourcing activities continue to remain healthy and above the baseline. Design activities grew +1.5% year-over-year and +19% vs. the baseline, while sourcing activities remained +35% above the baseline in July.

• Growth in global activities are being fueled by two primary markets that continue to remain strong – automotive and cloud computing/data centers.

• Growth in the automotive sector is driven by a combination of healthy backlog of orders, growth in electric vehicle demand, and autonomous vehicle focus which require higher content of chips and electronic components in automobiles. Growth in the cloud computing/data center market is being driven by continued growth in cloud infrastructure investments. The consumer electronics market continues to remain soft as consumer demand weakens amid on-going challenges with inflation.

• Looking ahead to the remainder of 2022, they (Supplyframe) continue to see economic disruptions in China from COVID lockdowns, rising prices of raw materials, on-going supply chain disruptions, prolonged shortages of chips, and weakening consumer demand as key risk factors that will continue to drive uncertainties in the market.

• Trends observed across the DSI Network in July continue to be closely aligned to broader electronics components trends reported by other industry sources.

Design Activity Overview. July 2022

Design Activity Index

Based on part level activity by engineers on the DSI Network. Activities included are related to part evaluation and part placement in designs via EDAs. Activities, are normalized, weighted, and scored on a scale of 0 – 100. Index scores are relative to the dimensions of data being included in the analyses (ie. Country, manufacturer, categories). A value of 100 reflects maximum volume of activities in the given data set. A value of 50 reflects half of the maximum value in the given data set.

Global design activities decreased slightly month-over-month in July due to seasonality but continues to remain strong overall. The months between June through August typically experience a slow down in design activities due to the summer holidays in Europe. The seasonal decrease in design activities from June to July have historically averaged between -4% to -5% globally. This year, design activities decreased by -5.5% over the same time period, performing in line with expectations.

Even with the decrease in activities we’ve observed the last two months, global design activities grew +1.5% year-over-year in July. This growth was driven by increase in activities in EMEA (+3%) and the Americas (+6%) regions. Top countries contributing to the growth in each region were as follows:

• Americas: US (+11% Y/Y); Canada (+25% Y/Y)

• EMEA: German (+2% Y/Y); Italy (+15.2% Y/Y)

• APAC: S. Korea (+14% Y/Y); Japan (+6% Y/Y); China (+2% Y/Y)

Top product categories seeing growth in these countries include: connectors; power circuits; diodes, MCUs, timing devices (oscillators).

Sourcing Activity Overview. July 2022

Sourcing Activity Index

Based on part level activity by buyers on the DSI Network. Activities included are related to buy clicks on the the DSI Network. Index is scored on a scale of 0 – 100.

Index scores are relative to the dimensions of data being included in the analyses (ie. Country, manufacturer, categories). A value of 100 reflects maximum value in the given data set. A value of 50 reflects half of the maximum value in the given data set.

Global sourcing activities decreased -4% in July, in line with seasonality.

July’s global sourcing activities fell by just -4% month-over-month, performing better than June when global sourcing activities decreased by -11% from prior month. July’s performance was aligned with past performances for the same period (seasonal avg. -5% month-over-month).

All regions performed within the range of seasonality, with EMEA showing the largest decrease (-8% monthover-month) and APAC showing the smallest decrease in activities (-1% month-over-month).

Although global sourcing activities have shown signs of slowing the last two months, activity levels are still well above the baseline (+35%), highlighting that even amidst the continuing challenges in the market - overall demand remains strong.

Supplyframe expects that component demand for automotive and cloud computing applications will continue to show signs of growth, while consumer electronics application will remain soft with current economic conditions.

Recap.July 2022

• Global design and sourcing activities performed in line with seasonal trends in July. Supplyframe did not observe any additional slow down in activities as we had in June.

• Even with the recent slow down in activities, global design and sourcing activities remain strong and well above the baseline. Global design activities grew +1.5% year-over-year in July. They (Supplyframe) anticipate that overall demand across the design-to-source journey will continue to remain above the baseline through the remainder of 2022.

• Growth in design and sourcing activities are occurring in the automotive and cloud computing/data center markets, where multiple external factors continue to drive strong end-market demand. On the other hand, the consumer electronics market continues to show signs of softening due to weakening consumer demand.

• Economic disruptions in China from COVID lockdowns, rising prices of raw materials, ongoing supply chain disruptions, prolonged shortages of chips, and weakening consumer demand continue to be top key risk factors that all suppliers and distributors should be closely monitoring and planning appropriately to address.

• Trends observed across the DSI Network in July continue to be closely aligned to broader electronics components trends reported by other industry sources.
